United and Marriott dual upper elite members can register for bonus points and miles

Marriott Bonvoy Titanium and Ambassador members with United Premier Gold, Premier Platinum and Premier 1K status can now register for limited-time bonus points on their flights and hotel stays.

United and Marriott dual upper elite members can register for bonus points and miles

Since the inception of Marriott Bonvoy in 2018, Titanium and Ambassador Elite members have been eligible for United Airlines' entry-level Premier Silver status through the RewardsPlus partnership. Likewise, United Premier Gold, Platinum, 1K and Global Services members have been eligible for Marriott Bonvoy Gold Elite status.

While this partnership has been a way for mid- and upper-tier United MileagePlus members to secure Marriott status (and upper-tier Marriott elite members to secure entry-level United status), it hasn't offered an incentive beyond that to do business with the brand.

For a limited time, that has changed.

From now until Dec. 9, Marriott Bonvoy Titanium and Ambassador members can earn bonus points when they fly with United, while United Premier Gold, Platinum, 1K and Global Services members can earn extra miles when they stay at Marriott properties.

Here's what you need to know about this new offer.

If you hold Marriott Titanium or Ambassador status and United Premier Gold or higher status, start by linking your accounts on Marriott's website. You may also need to link your accounts on United's website.

Then, go to the promotion's landing page to register for the offer.

Bonus Marriott points on United flights

If you meet the eligibility criteria, you will receive 750 Marriott Bonvoy bonus points for each distinct United travel itinerary. Your travel must be completed no later than Dec. 9 to qualify. Only itineraries that involve flights operated by United or United Express are eligible. If you booked your flights using miles or a combination of miles and money, you won't receive the bonus Marriott points.

These accruals are in addition to your standard earnings in the MileagePlus program.

Our valuations peg 750 Marriott points at $6.30, so depending on the price of your itinerary, this could be a decent addition.

Bonus United miles on Marriott stays

If you qualify for this offer, you will earn 500 United MileagePlus miles for each eligible stay at Marriott Bonvoy participating hotels. The stay must be completed by Dec. 9, with at least one night checked in before that date. Qualifying stays do not include point purchases or redemptions and must be paid in cash.

Again, these accruals are in addition to your standard earnings with Marriott Bonvoy.

TPG values 500 United miles at $7.25, so that can be a nice boost to your MileagePlus balance on discounted Marriott stays.

A few notes

Bonvoy members must have their earning preference set to hotel points instead of airline miles to receive bonus points for United flights. In addition, this bonus applies once for each eligible itinerary. As a result, a round-trip United flight would only earn you 750 Marriott points — no matter the price. In addition, award tickets or those booked with a combination of miles and money aren't eligible.

Price also doesn't factor into the mileage you can earn on a Marriott stay, as a $100 stay at a budget Marriott brand would earn the same 500 United miles as a $2,000 stay at a St. Regis or Ritz-Carlton. Nevertheless, it only takes a few seconds to register, so there's no harm in doing so.

If you had flights or stays booked prior to Oct. 10 (the start of the promotion), you can still receive the bonus points or miles — as long as your flight or hotel stay begins prior to Dec. 9.

Bottom line

This promotion with Marriott and United resembles the partnership between American Airlines and Hyatt, allowing dual elite members to earn additional points when transacting with either company. Hyatt elite members can earn bonus points for American flights (1 point per dollar spent), while American elite members can earn extra AAdvantage miles for Hyatt stays (1 mile per dollar). Additionally, they frequently offer status matches or fast-track offers.

However, the Hyatt-AA integration applies to all elite members in both programs, whereas this is limited to higher-tier elite members.

That said, it's great to see a new offer for frequent travelers to earn even more rewards on their trips — and hopefully, it's just the beginning of an even better Marriott-United partnership to further engage elite members and enhance earning rates.
