Singapore-Bali tour with grandchildren spoilt, senior citizen to get over Rs 2 lakh from MakeMyTrip

MakeMyTrip did not provide the travel itinerary in advance and changed hotels without informing him, the man complained to the consumer court.

The National Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission (NCDRC) recently directed travel company MakeMyTrip (MMT) to pay a consumer Rs 2.2 lakh for not sharing his travel details in advance.

“….by providing the details of the tour on the last day, the travel company did not give the complainant the time to seek out or do any adjustment to the same in consultation with the travel company,” noted the NCDRC in an order dated January 22.

In 2012, Devraj Beharnani, now 75, booked a travel package worth Rs 4.5 lakh with MMT to visit Jakarta, Bali and Singapore with his grandchildren. The package included obtaining necessary visas, air tickets and reservation of accommodations in hotels, pick and drop facilities, three meals, sightseeing and the travel insurance policy.

Beharnani alleged that the travel company had not provided him with the travel itinerary, hotel booking details, checkout time for hotels, flight tickets, and travel insurance policy details until the date of his flight. Due to this, his trip was spoilt, and he suffered from mental tension, high blood pressure and a stroke.

The complainant also alleged that instead of booking direct flights, the travel company changed the route and booked connecting flights, so he had to wait at the Singapore airport for six hours. He further alleged that while the hotel booked in Jakarta was Le Meridien, but MMT changed it to Midplaza without giving any reason.

Festive offer

Beharnani further stated that MMT booked the Marina Bay Sands hotel in Singapore for two days despite being available for a third day. Due to this, he was forced to cancel the last day’s tour to the Singapore Zoo.

“…had the change of hotels been made subject to non-availability, it was the duty and responsibility of the travel company to inform the complainant well in advance but the travel company had not informed the complainant,” noted the NCDRC while awarding the complainant compensation.
